Crop-Wise Growing Guide

🍅 Tomato Growing Tips

  • Prepare raised beds with well-drained sandy loam soil (pH 6.0–6.8).
  • Sow seeds in seedling trays; transplant at 4–5 leaf stage (25–30 days).
  • Maintain spacing of 60×45 cm for hybrid varieties.
  • Apply balanced NPK at transplanting and again at flowering.
  • Stake plants when they reach 30 cm height to prevent lodging.
  • Watch for early blight and apply copper-based fungicide preventively.
  • First harvest at 65–75 days after transplanting.

🌶️ Chilli Growing Tips

  • Chilli prefers well-drained loamy soil with pH 6.0–7.0.
  • Treat seeds with Trichoderma before sowing to prevent damping-off.
  • Transplant 30–35 day old seedlings at 45×30 cm spacing.
  • Mulching conserves moisture and suppresses weeds significantly.
  • Apply potassium at flowering stage to improve fruit pungency and colour.
  • Thrips and mites are common — spray neem oil every 10 days preventively.
  • Harvest begins at 70–80 days; continue picking for 4–6 months.

🍆 Brinjal Growing Tips

  • Brinjal grows best in well-drained loam with pH 5.5–6.8.
  • Direct sow or transplant 25-day seedlings at 60×60 cm spacing.
  • Bacterial wilt is the biggest threat — use resistant varieties like Dark Pearl F1.
  • Apply organic matter and calcium at transplanting for robust root development.
  • Shoot and fruit borer is common; use pheromone traps and Bt sprays.
  • Fruits are ready when skin is glossy and firm; avoid over-maturity.
  • Regular harvesting every 3–4 days improves total yield significantly.

🌿 Okra Growing Tips

  • Direct sow okra seeds after soaking overnight to speed germination.
  • Sow 2–3 seeds per hole at 45×30 cm spacing; thin to one plant.
  • Okra is heat-loving; avoid water stagnation which causes root rot.
  • Yellow vein mosaic virus is the main disease — use resistant varieties.
  • Harvest pods at 5–7 cm length (4–5 days after flower opening).
  • Delayed harvesting makes pods fibrous and reduces market value.
  • Side-dress with nitrogen at 4 weeks to encourage branching and yield.

🥒 Cucumber Growing Tips

  • Cucumber needs warm soil (above 18°C) and full sun for best yield.
  • Create raised beds and add compost; pH 6.0–7.0 is ideal.
  • For greenhouse growing, choose parthenocarpic varieties like Crystal F1.
  • Maintain consistent soil moisture — irregular watering causes bitter fruits.
  • Train vines vertically on trellis to improve air circulation and yield.
  • Powdery mildew is common; spray sulphur or potassium bicarbonate early.
  • Harvest when fruits are dark green, firm and at desired size (14–18 cm).

🍉 Gourd & Melon Tips

  • Gourds and melons need large spacing (2×2 m for watermelon) and full sun.
  • Prepare land by adding large quantities of farmyard manure before sowing.
  • Direct sow 2 seeds per pit; keep one after germination.
  • Drip irrigation is strongly recommended to avoid fruit rot from wet soil.
  • For watermelon, remove competing female flowers early to concentrate fruit size.
  • Bitter gourd vines should be trained on a pandal (overhead trellis).
  • Harvest watermelon when tendrils near fruit dry up and skin becomes dull.

General Seed Sowing Tips

💧

Water Management

Water seeds gently using a rose can or mist sprayer. Overwatering is the #1 cause of seed failure. Allow soil to partially dry between watering.

🌡️

Temperature

Most vegetable seeds germinate best at 22–28°C. Use shade nets in peak summer and protect from cold in winter months.

🌱

Seed Depth

As a rule: sow seeds at a depth of 2–3× the seed diameter. Fine seeds like amaranth need very shallow sowing (1–2 mm).

🧪

Soil Mix

Use a mix of garden soil, cocopeat and compost (1:1:1) for seedling trays. Sterilize the mix to avoid damping-off disease.

☀️

Light

Seedlings need 6–8 hours of light. Leggy seedlings indicate insufficient light. Thin overcrowded seedlings early.

🦠

Biocontrol

Drench soil with Trichoderma + Pseudomonas solution 2 weeks before sowing to suppress soil-borne pathogens naturally.
